Day 4: A Song That Makes Me Sad

Unfortunately, this one is easy as well. This song is simple, yet powerful. It’s a sad reminder of the violence of racism that is a part of this country’s history. While we have thankfully moved beyond the public lynchings, the song is a reminder of our not too distant past and is still a call to do something to make the future a better place.

And, as an added bonus you get a second version of the song from Siouxsie and the Banshees. The Siouxsie version is the first version of this song that I heard. It was on their 1987 album Through the Looking Glass.

If you are moved by this song, and you should be, read a bit more about it over at Wikipedia. Take note of the long list of legendary artists who have recorded their own versions of the song. The list includes Diana Ross, Sting, and Lou Rawls.
